Are the Academic Goals quantifiable?

Yes

Are the materials Common Core, or do they claim to meet state or national standards?

This program provides the phonological foundations for success in reading and spelling, but isn't advertised as being aligned with specific national standards.

Are there multimedia features or suggestions for additional resources when students become engaged with specific topics?

No

Is the material innovative and eclectic? Does the material motivate the learner and lead to engaging questions and rabbit holes?

Not really, this is designed to be extremely targeted to fill gaps in phonemic awareness. It may lead to curiosity about spelling patterns and word etymology, but that is not the focus.

Additional Comments

This program is extremely streamlined with lightly scripted lessons for instructor ease. One aspect I adore about All About Spelling is the variable pace. The program is designed to take only 20 minutes a day, and has built in daily assessment. When the student masters a particular skill, you move on to the next lesson. In this way, no time is wasted, and all practice is targeted on skills the student needs to practice.

Additional Comments

The Bob Books series is an early-reader series of books. The books start with basic sounds and simple words. Each subsequent book increases with difficulty slowly by adding a new sound or two. One of the benefits of the short books is a child can read an entire book in one sitting.

Build Your Library: Secular Literature Based Homeschool Curriculum and Educational Products

I currently use the Core Knowledge Sequence, but I found out about Build Your Library. If I weren't already doing CK, I would use BYL! I compared the 8th grade BYL to the CK 8th grade and I decided to stay with CK. But perhaps for 9th grade! I was impressed by the BYL, so I did purchase the WWII Unit as well as the Timeline, (Book of Centuries) and the Timeline Figures. I love timelines and I still have not found one that clicked with me, until now!
It is Charlotte Mason 'inspired' but modern and SECULAR!!!! I looked into CM style when I first started HSing and I found the Ambleside program, but it wasn't secular or modern enough for me. BYL utilizes modern and secular literature and is not as old fashioned.

They have K-9 and several Unit Studies, plus the Timeline and also Narration cards, which I also bought. If you’re wondering if Build Your Library is the right program for you, look through their book list and see. They also have samples on their website and they have a Facebook Group group for 'users', and they have ones for each grade and middle school: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1423657587900276/

Additional Comments

I recommend this 'All-In-One' Online Curriculum for so many reasons. It is perfect for people who wish to leave public online schools, like K12 but who do like the format and concept of online schholing. This is different because it is not an accredited state program. You would still send your 'notice of intent to homeschool' letter to your district and still do a yearly assessment, )if your state requires that). It is also not common core. It is an easy to use, online curriculum for preK-12 and it has electives and it is all at your own pace; and, it's FREE! I think it is perfect for parents looking to independently homeschool with complete flexibility and with a little structure.
DK12 is a flexible program that allows parents to use all or parts of the curriculum with full control over the instruction. Not affiliated with public school, you may use it any way you like: part time, full time, or supplement, all at your own pace!

The seven standard courses are Language Arts, Reading/Literature, Math, Science, History/Social Studies, Visual/Performing Arts, and Physical Education. Electives include Spanish, HTML Coding, Healthy Living, and Personal Finance.

*From their website:
- Over 16,000 Lessons
- Weekly Spelling Program with digital quiz
- Quizzes and Tests in Science and History/Social Studies
- Grading and Reporting tools
- Classic Literature eBooks library
- Non-Common Core, secular
- Fun and Easy-to-Use
- Optional Parent/Teacher Account

We like the clean easy online format. Perfect for those who dislike visually cluttered screens and overstimulation. The easy navigation is like a blog. and if you have ever tried and online public school, you know how the navigation is like a nightmare of links and tabs! There are no games or animation. My daughter can do it all by herself on the days that I am at work and I get an email of what she has done at the end of the day!
Check out this 'Sample Student Account' http://discoveryk12.com/dk12/seventh-grade-sample-account/
they also have a Facebook Page and a Facebook Group.

The workbook series supports incremental-learning of phonics for emerging readers. The workbooks start with basic phonics and work their way to more advanced diphthongs and syllables. These lesson require significant writing on each worksheet, which could be problematic with children who struggle with writing.

Overall we like the program. We have used gifted and talented which was formerly known as Eep to buy for several years now and the program has undergone significant changes over the years we liked the program before and after the change did not like it but have learned to like the new program as well I like the program as a mother because it doesn't require any significant instruction and or assistance from me my nine-year-old daughter was working at fifth grade level is able to work on and complete almost all of the problems without any assistance from me my daughter likes the program's there they have some small projects and some video interactive components that are interesting some stories and additional facts about cooking and things that are not just simply mathematical that draw her interest I'd like the logical way that math is presented it's clearly Progressive the the concepts are presented in a way that makes sense logically there's just not for example multiplication is just not down there and then they start doing multiplication but you can see that they're giving things to to do the add one thing on top of another and over a course of time it all turns into something that looks just like the multiplication that we know additionally for children who are gifted and do not require much repetition the program is adaptive and if you get most of the problems correct it will just move on to the next concept without requiring a lot of repetition so it does do a good job of assessing Mastery of an of an idea unfortunately this means that if you don't stay with the program and continue to work on it for we say 15 or 20 problems each day my daughter can quickly forget what she has learned and we don't really have an opportunity to go back easily and review she is lost since there is no repetition from day-to-day but she would get very angry if she was forced to do a lot of repetition so in general the quick nature of the program is good for us so overall I think it is a good program for independent workers and quick Learners who are naturally gifted at math and who have parents to understand math at home who can sit down and help them easily

Additional Comments

The Global Village School (GVS) curriculum is a social justice / environmentally- focused curriculum. It is primarily a list of resources with a variety of suggestions on how to facilitate learning. It encourages project-based, child-guided learning. The book suggestions include age-appropriate books on multiple topics including, myths, religion, and sexuality (including LGBT issues). GVS provides a variety of ways to approach topics, but they do not provide worksheets nor daily lessons. This allows the parent to be as structures or unstructured as they like. GVS also has a school program separate from the curriculum, that can provide records of enrollment, as well as teacher support for the family. *Note that this review covers the K-8 curriculum guides. High school is a separate program.

Additional Comments

Growing with Grammar is a workbook based program. The program is designed to be completed over a typical 36 week long school year, working on 3 lessons per week. The lessons are quick and to the point. If your child is a fluent reader, they should be able to work independently on the lessons, needing only occasional help from the parent. We are usually able to complete a lesson in 10-15 minutes. The answer key and tests are an optional purchase, and can be added on for only a few dollars more. This is a good program for kids that do not like a lot of crafts, projects, etc, and simply want to do their work and move on, (ie. kids that are very fact-driven). Since the lessons are very quick, it is easy to accelerate through the program if that is what your child desires. We have used levels 1 and 2, and my son will often choose to work on more than one lesson in a day.

IXL has some printable materials. They are mostly for classrooms, but homeschoolers might find some useful. There are goals posters, and customizable certificates, but I like the grade progress charts. Track students progress throughout the year. Additional Comments

My 5th grader used junior analytical grammar/mechanics this year. The grammar book takes 11 weeks and the mechanics book takes 15 weeks (we did the grammar in the fall and are doing mechanics this spring). My daughter is doing very well with this program, better I think than the other grammar programs she has done in the past (though she hasn't done poorly with any of them). That said, she finds it a little dry and is asking to switch to something different next year. The program is straight forward with the students only needing feedback on completed work. The one change we did make to the program is that it says to go over each worksheet the following day, before the student does the new practice worksheet. We instead went over it the same day it was completed, as I didn't see the value in waiting a day to give feedback to my child.

Sensory based learning

Additional Comments

It's great for toddlers/preK or those who don't know their letter sounds. Too low for readers. Easy lessons very quick, parent guide is totally inclusive.

Excellent customer service and this was the first version, I suspect they will have more complete version later, but as is it's incomplete, and didn't come with Montessori grammar symbols or lessons to support the use of them.

Additional Comments

My family has used other spelling curriculums in the past, and this is by far our favorite. We have done 1st through 5th grade levels and plan on continuing with this curriculum for all our kids through 8th grade (the last year it is offered). The curriculum expects students to understand the meaning of the words each week, gives multiple ways to practice the words throughout the week, incorporates pre-tests and post-tests each week, and tasks the parent with having the children spell their weekly words orally each day (which I find helpful and helps hit on different learning styles). My oldest is working on cursive writing this year and she likes how they give the spelling words in print and cursive every Monday.

Unsure - may motivate other language arts skills than spelling

Additional Comments

I have used Spelling you See level A with 2 different children on different grade levels. I love the boxes to write the letters in- reluctant writers know to only write the correct number of letters, and that makes it more adaptable for children with learning issues. This is a great program for children who want to learn reading and writing at the same time, like my 7 year old who is working slowly through phonics reading. My student who learned to read first- but needed a lot of encouragement to write- has gained a lot of conficence with the slow pace of this program even though he is 9 and reads above grade level.

Additional Comments

Virtual Homeschool Group offeres many subjects. We used it for math. They offer free, online clases at virtualhomeschoolgroup.org. It's 'at-your-own-pace' and is easily navigable, which is really great for teaching motivation, independent thinking and extra great if you are working out of the home or working with other children.

They use Saxon Math textbooks. With Saxon Math, previously learned concepts are continually reviewed, and assessment is frequent and cumulative. At each grade level, math concepts are introduced, reviewed, and practiced over time in order to move students from understanding to fluency.

Virtual Homeschool Group is 100% volunteer-run. They have live Lessons, which fill up right away, and at your own pace (AYOP) recorded lectures where you set your own speed, all with course outlines, assignments and quizzes. All your tests are graded and grades are recorded for you. They have curriculum core classes and electives and student and family helps. *You just have to buy the textbook. I found a used one on Amazon.
