Dr. Shearer’s Biography
Dr. Tonya Shearer is a marine biologist and molecular ecologist whose research has focused on the use of genetic and genomic technology to assess coral reef health. She spent over nine years working at Georgia Institute of Technology, first as a Postdoctoral Fellow and then as a Research Scientist studying environmental influences on the health and connectivity of coral reefs in the Caribbean and in Fiji. Most recently she has used her scientific training, professional and personal networks and entrepreneurial spirit to open Discover Science Center, an informal science education center designed to supplement the STEAM curriculum taught in K-12 schools and homeschool programs. As a scuba instructor, Dr. Shearer also shares her love for the ocean with kids and adults through the recreational diving and scientific diving programs she develops and teaches.
