Empower K-12 homeschoolers to lead! Discover how families and educators can weave critical media literacy, social justice, and hands-on civic engagement into a dynamic secular curriculum. In an era dominated by digital noise, algorithmic bias, and online polarization, home educators face a critical question: how do we help young learners move beyond passive screen time to become active, critical participants in society? This session explores practical strategies for transforming homeschooling environments into spaces for democratic agency, media literacy, and grassroots civic action. Rather than treating civics as a dry textbook unit or media literacy as an isolated technical skill, this presentation demonstrates how global citizenship, media literacy, and community organizing can be woven across subject areas and leveraged to develop relevant, real-world skills. Drawing on insights from project-based learning and human-centered mentorship models—including examples of student-led advocacy around environmental ethics, human rights, and animal protection—participants will learn how to shift a student’s role from a passive “consumer of information” into an active “practitioner of democracy.” Attendees will leave with concrete tools to audit their own learning spaces for student agency, tools to guide young people through systems analysis of local and global issues, integrate media literacy frameworks that interrogate source bias, and support long-term reflection through student-driven documentation and evaluation.
