The Birds & the Bees & the Flowers & the Trees – Elementary Level Science Series Season 1 (Winter/Spring 2021)

The Birds & the Bees & the Flowers & the Trees - Elementary Level Science Series

Session 2 of Season 1

In this fun and educational 3-week session, students will learn some of the basic concepts in ecology. Learn about food webs, bees (the perfect pollinators), and the relationship between plants and animals and how they have evolved together.

The Birds & the Bees & the Flowers & the Trees is one of the 4 sessions in the Elementary Level Science Series. Each session of the Elementary Level Science Series meets 3 times over a span of 3 weeks. Each 3-week Session includes important, foundational science topics, scientific modeling, focused definitions of core science terms and phrases all in an engaging, high-interest format.

Each Session of the Elementary Level Science Series has hands-on labs that have been thoughtfully paired with written materials. Materials will be emailed 2-weeks before the class meets with guided readings, materials list, lab instructions as well as suggestions for extra activities and how to use the topics and material for project-based unit studies. During the live sessions, students can ask questions as we go over the material. Then we will work on an lab/activity as a class. Classes will be taped for anyone unable to attend a class.

For those using the REAL Science Odyssey Biology 1 curriculum, these lessons will highlight, but not duplicate, labs and activities from the course. 1st – 4th grades recommended. Course materials will be staggered depending on the grade level, science acumen of the student.

* Lab materials will be inexpensive and easy to obtain.

What Makes SEA Online Classes Special

These are hands-on get up and move around, science classes that are fun & educational.

This is what parents have to say about the Elementary Science Series.

We are absolutely loving the format, content and of course teaching in our Thursday Science Series! Thank you for all the hard work you have done. It’s fabulous and hands down the best homeschool class my kids have ever taken. C.D.

My child is really enjoying your class and I love how you are teaching to this age group! I wish there were more classes like this for the elementary age group you are offering! S.N.

I wanted to let you know that when I ask the girls what their favorite class is, both agree, it is your online science series :-). C.W.

My child has genuinely enjoyed your class. My father is a life-long ecologist and so my child has been exposed to a lot of science. It’s tough for me to find something interesting and engaging enough for them – and you’ve delivered in spades! Thank you! Your excitement and engagement with these kids is terrific! B. is genuinely enjoying the classes!!! We can’t wait for more!!! K.P.

    R. loves all science and the way you teach is so engaging for my child. The hands on projects have been a lot of fun. Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm with the children. It is wonderful!

How The Earth Got It’s Shape was wonderful. Thank you. M. cracks me up. I am purposely not around so she can tell me ALL about it after, as that is really how she learns best, by teaching. The way she talks about you, is so endearing. She says, Mom, Blair is seriously in love with science. LOL. 🙂

These classes will have your kids LOVING science as much as Blair does!

The Birds & the Bees & the Flowers & the Trees – Elementary Level Science Series Session 2

There are 3 meetings (1 per week for 3 weeks) covering a different topic in biology each week.

In these three weeks, there is a focus on conducting field research and making observations as a part of science investigations. Students will be encouraged to share what they learned about the life cycle of a bee.

Week 1: What the Birds Where You Live Tell You about Your Local Food Webs

Prior to class, students will collect information about the local bird populations. We will use this data for a highly engaging activity where we form hypotheses about food webs, plants, and animals where students live.

Week 2: Bees: The Life & Times of a Perfect Pollinator

There are 16,000 known species of bees.  Students will be encouraged to make outside observations of bees to learn what common species live in their area. Students will develop a scientific model showing the life cycle of one of these species. We will look at some common threats to bees and activities will be shared about what students can do to help.

Week 3: Symbiotic Relationships: Flowering Plants and Pollinators

After reading about the co-evolution of flowering plants and pollinators, students will investigate the interaction between them while conducting field research in their neighborhood. In class, we will improve on one aspect of an observed plant or animal as we hypothesize about a possible new evolutionary event.

The Birds & the Bees & the Flowers & the Trees; is one of the 4 sessions in the Elementary Level Science Series. The Elementary Level Science Series has 3 meets 3 times.
