What’s the Matter? – Elementary Level Science Series Season 2 (Winter/Spring 2021)

What's the Matter? - Elementary Level Science Series Session 1

Session 1 of Season 2

If you were to jump up right now and peer closely at the wall, what would you see? Do you think it would be an uncountable number of constantly moving particles? In this three-week session students will learn the basic explaining matter. They will explore the structure and properties of matter. They will learn about atoms, molecules, and different types of bonds. Students will make hands-on scientific models and engage in activities as they investigate and learn about the basics explaining what matter is.

What’s the Matter? is one of the 4 sessions in the Elementary Level Science Series Season 2. Each session of the Elementary Level Science Series meets 3 times over a span of 3 weeks. Each 3-week Session includes important, foundational science topics, scientific modeling, focused definitions of core science terms and phrases all in an engaging, high-interest format that meet important Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

Each Session of the Elementary Level Science Series has hands-on labs that have been thoughtfully paired with written materials. Materials will be emailed 2-weeks before the class meets with guided readings, materials list, lab instructions as well as suggestions for extra activities and how to use the topics and material for project-based unit studies. During the live sessions, students can ask questions as we go over the material. Then we will work on an lab/activity as a class. Classes will be taped for anyone unable to attend a class.

For those using the REAL Science Odyssey Chemistry 1 curriculum, these lessons will highlight, but not duplicate, labs and activities from the course. 1st – 4th grades recommended. Course materials will be staggered depending on the grade level, science acumen of the student.

* Lab materials will be inexpensive and easy to obtain.

What Makes SEA Online Classes Special

These are hands-on get up and move around, science classes that are fun & educational.

This is what parents have to say about the Elementary Science Series.

We are absolutely loving the format, content and of course teaching in our Thursday Science Series! Thank you for all the hard work you have done. It’s fabulous and hands down the best homeschool class my kids have ever taken. C.D.

My child is really enjoying your class and I love how you are teaching to this age group! I wish there were more classes like this for the elementary age group you are offering! S.N.

I wanted to let you know that when I ask the girls what their favorite class is, both agree, it is your online science series :-). C.W.

My child has genuinely enjoyed your class. My father is a life-long ecologist and so my child has been exposed to a lot of science. It’s tough for me to find something interesting and engaging enough for them – and you’ve delivered in spades! Thank you! Your excitement and engagement with these kids is terrific! B. is genuinely enjoying the classes!!! We can’t wait for more!!! K.P.

    R. loves all science and the way you teach is so engaging for my child. The hands on projects have been a lot of fun. Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm with the children. It is wonderful!

How The Earth Got It’s Shape was wonderful. Thank you. M. cracks me up. I am purposely not around so she can tell me ALL about it after, as that is really how she learns best, by teaching. The way she talks about you, is so endearing. She says, Mom, Blair is seriously in love with science. LOL. 🙂

Blair Lee will have your children LOVING science as much as she does!

What’s the Matter – Elementary Level Science Series Season 2 Session 1

There are 3 meetings (1 per week for 3 weeks) covering a different topic in chemistry each week.

In these three weeks, there is a focus on using a scientific model to help with learning and understanding. Each week there will also be a fun lab where students investigate chemical properties. Students will be encouraged to research and share about an element of their choosing.

Week 1 – Making Molecules

Atoms make molecules, and molecules bond together to make things larger than planet Earth. This week students will learn about atoms and molecules as the make scientific models looking at different types of molecules and the bonds that hold them together.

Week 2 – The States of Matter

There are 4 states of matter. We will learn about all 4, including plasma, as we investigate and learn about solids, liquids, and gases. The hands-on activities will include the changing states of matter.

Week 3 – The Properties of Matter

Each state of matter has distinct properties that define it. This week students will engage in a fun (& educational) activity as we look at the properties of each state of matter and what it takes to have a change from one state to another.

What’s the Matter is one of the 4 sessions in the Elementary Level Science Series Season 2.

Materials List is on the Teachable website. All materials are inexpensive, easy to obtain, and in most cases you already will have them at home.

To interact in class: Live sessions will be best experienced with a camera and microphone. Parents will need a Zoom account (free).

Usually 2-3 hours per week of work, including class.

Students will gain an understanding of some important basic concepts in chemistry

Students will learn important on-topic vocabulary

Students will learn lab technique
