Each dog breed profile has all the elements of a good story: memorable characters, excitement, cliff-hangers, humor and a satisfying ending.
Readers learn not only about the dog breed and whether it’s right for their family, they read tales of hero dogs, and also absorb history, geography and popular culture.
The book is beautifully illustrated with photos of each breed on a different, painted background. A real treat for the eyes that complements the text. No other dog book has pictures like these.
A Book for All Ages
This book is just right for age 10 and up to read by themselves; or younger kids to be read to. You and your own parents will also love this book.
A guide to pronunciation is given for the more difficult breed names.
The Most Recognizable and Popular Dog Breeds
This book profiles 20 of the most recognizable and popular dog breeds today, discussing
whether or not they are good with children…
how the breed helps people…
heroic deeds of the various breeds…
famous dogs of a particular breed…
famous people (such as Presidents) who owned the breed…
and the origin of each breed.
Here is the list of dog breeds covered:
Jack Russell Terrier
West Highland White Terrier (Westie)
Designed for Browsing
The book is designed for browsing; that is, the breeds are not in alphabetical order, but ordered to highlight the differences among the breeds. A table of contents and an alphabetical index are provided, if you want to go straight to a particular breed.
Jobs with Dogs
There is also a section, “Jobs with dogs,” for the young person who would like to work with dogs when he/she grows up. Some jobs you can even do as a teenager!
The Author and Illustrator
The author, Eve Heidi Bine-Stock, wrote the three-volume series, “How to Write a Children’s Picture Book.” The illustrator, Jean Batzell Fitzgerald, is well-known for her unique dog art.
Dogs: A Kid’s Book of Dog Breeds by Eve Heidi Bine-Stock is an award-winning educational book for children. The illustrations are incredibly beautiful, and the text is easily understood and entertaining. Historical facts that are included are written in an engaging and memorable manner that draws the young reader in at the start. Also included are accounts of famous people and their faithful canine companions, as well as remarkably detailed descriptions and profiles of each dog. With the histories of twenty of the most popular breeds, children will soon become well acquainted with the more recognizable dog breeds in America. I would recommend this book to children aged six and up.
This book was so fun to read. It includes many dog breeds that are the most popular for children and includes lots of fun information about each breed….I was once an elementary school librarian. If I still had a school library, this book would certainly be on my library shelves where I know it would get checked out often.
A charming, useful book. Each essay is clear, and interesting regarding the history of the dog breeds. The illustrations by Jean Batzell Fitzgerald are quirky and charming.
