Sample Videos from Marine Science
These videos are a sampling from chapters 1 and 2 of Marine Science. In the e-book version of this book, the videos are integrated directly into the course. In that way, they can be viewed as an extension of the written material in order to highlight and emphasize what is being studied.
Explore the ocean as a living laboratory.
Marine Science is an 18-chapter science course designed for middle-grade learners in grades 4–7, with flexibility for advanced younger students or older students who need a rich elective. This full-year program uses the ocean as a lens to integrate geology, chemistry, physics, and biology into a single immersive science journey.
Every chapter blends engaging text, vibrant visuals, and hands-on exploration. Students watch and analyze over 90 original videos, interact with curated images and diagrams, and complete thoughtfully designed labs and activities. Opportunities for modeling, inquiry, and reflection are woven throughout, ensuring learners don’t just read about science—they do it.
Marine Science also builds cross-disciplinary connections. Students practice structured science writing, analytical problem-solving, and even explore art, history, and design connections. Math skills are reinforced in context, while writing prompts model the conventions of science communication. Creative expression is encouraged, helping students grasp complex concepts with both precision and imagination.
NGSS Alignment
The course is fully aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for grades 6–8. Scaffolding makes it accessible to younger learners, while many chapters extend into high school standards in areas such as evolution, genetics, ocean chemistry, climate change, and conservation. This progression makes the course ideal for mixed-age classrooms, enrichment, or a rigorous science elective. A full standards appendix is included. Check out the standards Marine Science meets.

I love how the videos are integrated right into the textbook so I don’t have to make sure my kid stops to watch a video that’s only mentioned by name – my kid can just click play! \Basically this is how electronic classes should be! I don’t have to dig around or make a list for my kid to follow, they can just keep going in the book and everything they need is right there.
This textbook is really visually appealing – beautiful photos, easy to understand illustrations and chart, and the videos are interesting and fun to watch. Nice animations, clear speaker, etc. (It’s a fine pace, but I expect my kid to watch it at 1.25 or 1.5x, but luckily that is an option embedded right into the video player. I love that watching Happy Feet is a suggestion for studying coastal birds. The labs all seem to be easy to find materials

As a Fisheries Biologist by trade, this Marine Science curriculum meets my high standards. It is robust AND engaging. In the past, I have blended several resources to cultivate a my own curriculum for my science-loving learner, which required copious amounts of time and work. Finally with Marine Science, there’s a quality curriculum on the market for Middle School speciality science. Marine Science offers a comprehensive text (pdf or printed), easy-to-understand graphs and tables, relevant experiments your learners will look forward to, and plenty of opportunities to deep dive. I especially appreciate the “Critical Thinking” questions featured within the lessons and on a few of the Chapter Quizzes, as well as the Check for Understanding sections that make real-world connections.
The video integration with the textbook is perfect for Middle School learners that crave independence, while also giving the educator peace of mind since the videos do not lead to a distracting website, nor does the educator have to hunt down videos to replace videos that have been removed from YouTube since the videos were created specifically for this course. The Teacher’s Guide layout makes planning quick and easy, with all video links, required materials, and learning objectives right at the beginning of each lesson. Lastly, the Teacher’s Guide is incredibly thorough, allowing anyone to feel completely confident to facilitate an exciting year of learning Marine Science.

I’m so excited for Marine Science! We really enjoyed The Science of Climate Change and this course is even more in depth and expansive. I love how it integrates life science, earth science, and physical science into one cohesive package, which is hard to find in middle grades. The videos are short and to the point, and there are options for all types of learners, from hands on labs to writing and creative projects. I also love that there is a literature tie-in (in the suggested year long schedule). We can’t wait to use it!

In a time when climate change is seemingly being ignored despite its urgent need for attention, a course such as Blair Lee’s Marine Science is desperately needed. This course doesn’t just help students understand ocean environments and the creatures that live there, but how our actions as a society impact them and the world around us. It’s not all doom and gloom though as students learn ways they can make real change to protect the ocean and our marine friends.
WHAT WE LOVE
– This course is packed with information but it is given and explained in easy to understand terms making it accessible to learners.
– 93 videos are woven throughout the course to give multiple mediums for learning. There are both curated videos and animated ones that were made specifically for this course.
– Has 5 units with a total of 18 chapters which cover: Oceanography, Evolution and Adaptation in the Ocean, Ocean Ecosystems, and Environmental Science.
– A separate teacher’s guide is provided that includes: video links, material’s lists, consumables, problem sets, and answer keys by chapter. (Also included with the main student text, but available for easy access without having to flip through the student version)
– 28 labs and activities are included; including games, scientific modeling, art, and dissection.
– Labs include lab sheets to fully go through the scientific method. They also link to real world applications so learners can understand how this information applies to their life.
– Hands on projects and activities are spread out through the course giving a large variety of options for learners.
– Labs and activities start with an animated video that goes over what will be covered and instructions.
– Questions are built in throughout the course, rather than just at the end of each chapter to allow learners to check their understanding frequently.
– Students are asked to make their own hypothesis before finding out the results, to gain practice with the scientific method.
– Math is incorporated into the course.
– NGSS standards are provided so it is easy to track what’s covered, especially for those in states that require that information for progress.
– The problem sets included are a mix of multiple choice and short answer.
THINGS TO KNOW
– Aimed at 4th-8th grade. This is a solid middle school level course, but can work for younger high school aged learners looking for a base or younger learners who have are advanced in science and math. This would not be a good fit for lower elementary.
– Pacing guides are included and cover both a 32 week or 18 week schedule. These are suggestions, however you can adjust it to fit your family’s needs.
– The course is written to the student.
– A “How to Use This Course” is provided to get the maximum amount of learning out of it.
While for the most part the course is open and go, you will need to gather materials for the labs, projects, and activities. You will want to gather those ahead of time to be prepared.
– The EPUB version is screen reader compatible, but the pdf version is not. Your purchase does include instructions on how to get the EPUB version if it’s needed.
– While there is gender diversity in the scientist spotlights, the majority of the spotlights feature those that are white with three who are BIPOC. These are all great scientists, but to add further diversity you can add on books such as:
– Shark Lady by Jess Keating
– Changing the Equation by Tonya Bolden
– The Vast Wonder of the World by Mélina Mangal
– Rebels Girls Climate Warriors
