Marine Science takes students on an ecosystem-based journey through the ocean. Structured around conceptual units—from ocean chemistry and energy transfer to coral reefs and deep-sea life—the course emphasizes how organisms adapt to their environments. Students conduct experiments, analyze data, explore case studies, and watch integrated videos that bring ocean science to life. The final unit addresses human impacts on the ocean and global conservation efforts, helping students connect scientific learning to environmental stewardship.

Sample Videos from Marine Science

These videos are a sampling from chapters 1 and 2 of  Marine Science. In the e-book version of this book, the videos are integrated directly into the course. In that way, they can be viewed as an extension of the written material in order to highlight and emphasize what is being studied.

Marine Science is an 18-chapter, one-semester science course designed for middle-grade learners in grades 4–7. Focused on oceanography and marine biology, this course delivers an integrated, immersive approach to learning science—connecting essential concepts in geology, chemistry, physics, and biology through the lens of the ocean. It aligns with key Next Generation Science Standards and incorporates Common Core-aligned practices in both math and language arts.

The course is multimodal, combining rich visuals, curated content, and hands-on engagement. Each chapter features color photographs, illustrations, and videos, over 90 of which were developed specifically for this course to bring important topics to life. Embedded throughout are opportunities for modeling, inquiry-based questions, and interactive reinforcement of core concepts. Every chapter also includes thoughtfully designed labs and activities that scaffold learning and deepen understanding.

Marine Science supports cross-disciplinary learning. Students build writing and analytical skills through scaffolded short-answer questions and structured writing prompts that model the conventions of science communication. The course also integrates math and history to show how science connects to the broader world. Creative expression is encouraged through art and design elements, helping students visualize complex ideas while remaining grounded in scientific accuracy.

This is science everyone should learn—engaging, relevant, and built to inspire curiosity about the ocean and the forces that shape life on Earth.
