You don’t need a curriculum to teach literature — you just need curiosity and a willingness to jump in and ask questions. This un-curriculum is designed to help you do just that. You can use it to turn any book into a full literature unit.

To use this guide, pick and choose the options that best suit your student and book. You can use discussion activities to guide your conversation and analysis as you read, then choose one of the summative activities as a way to wrap up your unit. There are lots of options, so don’t try to do them all!

Credit recommendation: Most books in our homeschool end up being 6- to 8-week units, and we’ll read five or six novels together each year, in addition to other literature activities, to add up to one literature credit.
Placement recommendation: Our high school literature units are designed to be rigorous academic studies; ideally, students should come into them having some familiarity with annotated reading, textual analysis, and writing about literature.
