Kathleen’s Bio

Kathleen Cotter Lawler is the daughter of Dr. Joan A. Cotter, author and creator of the RightStart™ Mathematics program. She is one of the first children to grow up under the RightStart principles. Kathleen has a degree in Home Economics from the University of Minnesota and has two Masters Degrees from the University of Mary in Bismarck, North Dakota. Kathleen is the mother of four children ages 21 to 25. Three of the Lawler children have graduated from North Dakota State University and the youngest is a senior at the University of Minnesota.

Kathleen travels all across the US and Canada, sharing the RightStart mission of helping children understand, apply, and enjoy mathematics. In her spare time, Kathleen designs and creates quilts.

Dybuster Calcularis – Efficient, computer based intervention for children with Dyscalculia Description

Dybuster Calcularis is a novel, scientifically developed, web-based intervention tool for children dyscalculia and math learning difficulties. The session describes the neurological development model of mathematical skills (by Aster and Shalev), from which the concepts of Calcularis are deducted. After these concepts are explained, the session then shows results from clinical studies, highlighting the success of the students, and closes with suggestions for the day-to-day implementation as a tool to strengthen home schooling intervention.

Dybuster Calcularis employs an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) based on artificial intelligence, allowing the system to individually adapt to each student’s strengths and weaknesses automatically. Therefore, students can practice independently on their own, while advanced coaching tools enable parents/educators to monitor their progress in detail and to react to specific error patterns with their own instructions.

Christian’s Bio

Christian Vögeli received his M.Sc. in Computational Science from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich in 2005. He was rewarded the SFIT Medal for his outstanding Master thesis on improving the information-theoretical model behind Dybuster Orthograph, Dybuster’s intervention tool for writing. As a research assistant he directed, with the support of psychologists, the successful user study which included over 85 school children. He has effectively led the development of Dybuster Orthograph from prototype to commercial product, and was the project leader for developing Dybuster Calcularis, the first intervention tool for dyscalculia, for which neuronal improvements were shown. He was awarded multiple prices such as the Venture Leaders or ACES award. Christian Vögeli is currently the CEO and Managing Director of Dybuster and supports teachers and parents in their quest to unlock their children’s full academic potential.

Sara, age 10, suffers from dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia and a severe vision disorder which includes a collapsed field of vision and double vision. She has always been homeschooled. Mary has found ways around these challenges to ensure Sara’s love of learning was never compromised. In one year alone, Sara went from being tested at a 3rd grade level and scoring 42% to being tested at a 5th grade level and scoring 90% on the standardized test! Mary has been homeschooling for over 7 years. She and her daughter’s have learned the ups and downs while homeschooling children who suffer from multiple disabilities.
