Introducing SEA Homeschoolers LGBTQ

Teaching social justice fosters compassion, tolerance, and respect for others. I hear from other homeschoolers that this is important to teach. I agree. For my 16 year old, Sean, I do this by weaving books about relevant topics through each academic year. This past year Sean has read Words will Break Cement the Passions of Pussy Riot, Beloved, 1984, Catcher in the Rye, Blood Meridian, March, Persepolis, the Last Lecture, and Becoming Nicole. I read through these books with Sean, and we discuss them. (Several of these were read in the SEA Homeschoolers Teen book club.) The book Becoming Nicole was the inspiration for the most recent SEA Homeschoolers group, SEA Homeschoolers LGBTQ.

Becoming Nicole is “The inspiring true story of a transgender girl, her identical twin brother, and an ordinary American family’s extraordinary journey to understand, nurture, and celebrate the uniqueness in us all, from the Pulitzer Prize–winning science reporter for The Washington Post.” Penguin Random House Books: Becoming Nicole

If you have followed SEA Homeschoolers, you know that we value the diversity of our community. At SEA we believe, “Our differences are our strengths.” It is our hope that every homeschooling family, even if it is just in the virtual world, finds a group where their family fits, a tolerant place where they can feel like they are part of a community. After reading Becoming Nicole, familiarizing myself with the horrible situation for members of the LGBTQ community in Russian when reading Words will Break Cement the Passions of Pussy Riot, and hearing about the struggles occurring for transgender people right now in the US, I realized this part of our homeschool community might need a group where they can discuss their unique situation. It was with this reasoning in mind we decided to start this group. To do this I reached out to Tina Harden and Meg Grooms, two homeschoolers who are part of the LGBTQ community, and asked them if they would like to start this group. They both said yes!

Please note you have to be a member of our main group if you want to join SEA LGBTQ. To join our main group click here. To join SEA LGBTQ please click here. This group is only open to homeschoolers 18+ who are members of the LGBTQ community. This group has the highest privacy setting of any of our groups. If you request to join, look in your “Other” folder. You will receive a PM.

SEA Homeschoolers offers a variety of support groups over on Facebook including our main academic group, the SEA 2E groupSEA Vegan, and our SEA chat group. Today we are proud to announce that we are adding  SEA Homeschoolers LGBTQ to our lineup.
