“I Take My Pen in Hand”: Teaching History and Literature Through Letters

Step into the past and discover the magic of letters! In this hands-on session, we’ll uncover how personal correspondence—from the Civil War to other pivotal moments in history—can transform your homeschool literature and history studies. Letters don’t just tell us what happened; they show us what people felt, feared, and hoped for. You’ll learn how to use these authentic voices to spark rich discussions, inspire creative writing, and deepen your learners’ understanding of both story and history. Together we’ll practice letter analysis and walk away with ready-to-use ideas for your unit studies. Come see how one simple letter can open the door to empathy, critical thinking, and a whole new way to experience the past!
