Introducing SEA Homeschoolers LGBTQ Teaching social justice fosters compassion, tolerance, and respect for others. I hear from other homeschoolers that this is important to teach. I agree. For my 16 year old, Sean, I do this by weaving books about relevant topics through each academic year. This past year Sean has read Words will Break Cement the Passions of Pussy Riot, Beloved, 1984, Catcher in the Rye, Blood Meridian, March, Persepolis, the Last Lecture, and Becoming Nicole. I read through these books with Sean, and we discuss them. (Several of these were read in the SEA Homeschoolers Teen book club.) The …

Yellowstone National Park, Montana On Silent Wings, Owls I love owls! Owls get me thinking about the natural selection that must have taken place for a bird to be a successful nighttime predator. From an evolutionary standpoint, it makes sense that a bird would evolve to fill the niche of flying nighttime predator. It’s the steps to getting there that fascinate me. What do you think came first silent flight, superior hearing, or the ability to see well in the dark? The parks we have stayed in had ranger talks every night. The owl talk at Yellowstone National Park was …

Dinosaur National Monument Park, Utah Isn’t it fascinating to think of dinosaurs roaming Earth? Maybe giant nautilus, small trilobites, or huge aquatic dinosaurs such as the plesiosaur swam on land you are now standing on. With its layer upon layer of fossils, walking through Dinosaur National Monument Park will make you think of things like that. When were dinosaurs in this area and when was this dry, arid landscape covered in water? The Principle of Superposition states: In a series of layered sedimentary rocks the oldest layer is at the bottom and the youngest layer is at the top. ~ …

Great Basin National Park, Utah This was our viewing spot for the Perseid meteor shower. It was nearly a perfect location. Nice and dark with no light pollution, which is what stargazers call the artificial lights that make it hard to view astronomical events. We started 10th grade on August 12th, 2015 by getting on the road. It might seem arbitrary to choose a date since we homeschool, but why not? 🙂 When we travel, we include history and science as a part of the journey. Over the next month I will be posting regular science and history information from …

The first time I thought about how others learn best was 40 years ago. I went to high school in Conroe, Texas, which is outside of Houston. Our Spanish teacher recruited several of us to volunteer with her church to assist migrant farmers who were illiterate and/or did not speak English. Our job was to help the men learn to read. Working with them was a powerful experience. It is rare for a young person to be made aware of how important knowledge is for adults who don’t have it. Even when parents push you to do well in school, …

Secular Academics for Homeschoolers Webinar I was so busy moderating the session Secular Academics, I did not really listen to it until just now. What a great talk! What an amazing group of homeschooling parents! WOW! You can click on this link All About Secular Curricula to listen to this as a podcast. I will apologize ahead of time for the audio on my end. It could be better; I am sorry. Everyone else sounded great though! We have it in both the auditory version and the written version, because we are homeschoolers, so you know we are all about making sure …

Homeschooling and Science A Winning Combination Sean Lee learning about the science of aviation. I am reposting this article in response to an article in the New York Times. There is a link to that article at the bottom of this post. The article validates what I am detailing below about how science is best learned! Learning science is something I have spent 24 years working at in one aspect or another. Today I want to talk about what I have learned over these years educating in various venues and to a broad range of age groups. This is the …

REAL Science Odyssey Chemistry 1 is a great choice for a science co-op, however because it was designed to be done 2 days a week it presents some scheduling challenges when conducting the labs in 1 day. You might want to teach this class 2 days per week, if you do, follow the format in the book as laid out on pages 14 – 16 of RSO Chemistry 1. If you don’t, some weeks will require parents to do work at home. This schedule is for doing the class 1 day per week. Note: The page numbers below are for …

Each week students were expected to do work outside of class. Outside of class: Weekly Read the text Complete the Famous Science Series Complete the Show What You Know When assigned Lab Reports: not all labs are good lab report labs. Check the Teacher’s Guide t labs I o see which labs I recommend having students write lab reports for. As a former college professor, I strongly recommend having students learn this important skill now. Lab reports are very formulaic to write and yet many college students cannot write them. If a student has trouble with the actual writing of …

Choosing the right curriculum makes a big difference for the success of a science co-op class, both for the student and the teacher. There are certain elements like labs paired with the theory that are important to the success of the class. As the co-op teacher/facilitator you have a responsibility to bring the level of science up for your students over the course of the co-op. Well-chosen curriculum makes this job much less work and more attainable. I taught at community college before retiring to homeschool my son. The better the curriculum that went with the class the easier the class was to …

Call to Worship Dubai I am dressed to go out and check out what happens during the Call to Worship in Dubai. The call is broadcast, and then the service is as well. The entire thing lasts about 30 minutes and sounds quite lovely, although I didn’t understand any of it. When we came back, the concierge asked me if we were Christian, and I said we were not religious. I decided that was the safest response in this Muslim country. I don’t talk about religion at home. I am not going to start here. The concierge was pretty surprised. …
